In appreciation and to mark the 40th anniversary of the Hammond Developmental Center (HDC), the Parents and Friends of Hammond Developmental Center Association recently hosted an open house.
Among those attending were a representative from the Governor's Office, seven state legislators, Hammond Mayor Mason Foster and Dr. Frederick Cerise, the newly appointed secretary of Louisiana's Department of Health and Hospitals. (...)
"We want them (taxpayers) to know money is being used for a very, very worthwhile service and need in the community," Millhollon said.
His 44-year-old son, Scotty, lives at HDC, where he has been "appropriately and well cared for" since 1965. Scotty Millhollon is among the overwhelming majority of the people living at HDC who have profound impairments in intellectual and adaptive functioning. (...)

HDC is the second largest of nine state-operated developmental centers, after Pinecrest in Pineville. The third most-populated is Metropolitan Center in Belle Chasse, said HDC Administrator Peter Calamari III.Calamari said finances has been allocated "fairly" to serve people with developmental disabilities.
